While the jail’s official capacity is 306, occupancy prior to the pandemic was consistently more than that. But the jail population has consistently hovered near the 300 mark and has been increasing. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department has worked with the court system to keep the number of prisoners down because of the pandemic.
